Estonia at the Olympics
Adapted from Wikipedia · Adventurer experience
Estonia first joined the Olympics in 1920, just two years after becoming its own country. The Estonian National Olympic Committee started in 1923.
Estonia joined both Summer and Winter Olympics until 1940, when the country was taken over by the Soviet Union. During this time, Estonian athletes competed under the Soviet flag. One special moment was during the 1980 Summer Olympics sailing event in Tallinn.
After gaining independence again in 1991, Estonia returned to the Olympics. The country first joined the Winter Olympics as its own nation in 1992 in Albertville and also joined the Summer Olympics in Barcelona that same year.
Some of Estonia's best Olympic moments include Jüri Lossman winning silver in the men's marathon and Alfred Neuland winning gold in the men's lightweight weightlifting event. Later, at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, Andrus Veerpalu won Estonia's first Winter Olympic gold in the men's 15 km cross-country skiing event.
Since 1991, Estonia has joined every Summer and Winter Olympics. The country has won most of its medals in wrestling, weightlifting, cross-country skiing, and athletics.
